Xylophone and Marimba Pieces
for Grades 4 - 8
This book contains 10 marimba pieces. They are presented according to their degrees of difficulty, ranging from the beginner to the advanced levels. All of the arrangements were inspired by authentic, Shona-style marimba music from Zimbabwe, but each has its own unique groove.
Supplemental materials include the tracks in MP3 format, instrument parts for projection in JPG format, and full scores in PDF format. The audio recordings of each piece are played by Scott, Dave and students.
The E-Book is in PDF and EPUB formats and includes all the Supplemental Materials. All hyperlinks are active as well as links to each song in the table of contents. Click on the song title of any song to return to the table of contents. Audio tracks are linked to each song.
Scott Tarantino has been a music teacher for the Sharon Public Schools in Sharon, Massachusetts, since 1995. He teaches K through 5 classroom music and clarinet and percussion lessons at their Heights Elementary School.
Several years ago Scott started the Tungurura Marimba Band for elementary students in Sharon. The band is auditioned and practices before school and during the students’ lunch period. Tungurura, which means “to impress,” is an appropriate name for this band for they aim to impress whenever they perform. Since its inception, the program has grown. Now, Scott directs five different groups for students in grades 4 to 9.
Scott graduated from the Boston Conservatory with a Bachelor of Arts in music education and guitar performance. At Central Connecticut State University, he earned a Masters of Science in Music Education. He is also Level III-Certified in Orff Schulwerk.
David Ruggiero teaches music in the Medfield Public Schools in Medfield, Massachusetts, at the Memorial and Dale Street Schools. At Memorial, he teaches Kindergarten and Grade One classroom music. There, he has composed many social competency songs used as part of the school’s monthly assemblies. At Dale Street, David teaches Grade Four strings and co-teaches and accompanies fourth and fifth grade orchestra.
In January 2011, David started the Ngoma Dzakanaka Marimba Band for Dale Street students. This auditioned group, whose name means “beautiful songs,” is extra-curricula. It consists of 16 boys and girls, and practice is held after school.
David was a Music Education Major at Rhode Island College and has earned his Masters Degree in Education from Lesley University, where the focus of study was the integration of the arts. He is also Level III-Certified in Orff Schulwerk.
